Order No. 400 of the Ministry of Healthcare validating State sanitary rules and regulations “Hygienic requirements for potable water intended for human consumption”.

State sanitary rules and regulations “Hygienic requirements for potable water intended for human consumption” shall be mandatory for executive authorities, local self-government, enterprises, institutions, organizations irrespective of the form of ownership and subordination, whose activities are related to the design, construction and operation of potable water supply systems, production and trade of potable water, supervision and control in the field of potable water supply to the population, and citizens. Sanitary norms establish the requirements for the safety and quality of potable water intended for human consumption, as well as the rules of production control and state sanitary and epidemiological supervision in the area of potable water supply of the population. Requirements of sanitary norms do not apply to mineral water for therapeutic uses, natural still water and water intended for special dietary uses, water for infants and children. Potable water intended for human consumption must meet the following hygienic requirements: (a) to be safe in relation to epidemic and radiation; (b) to have favorable organoleptic properties and (c) harmless chemical composition. For the production of potable water, preference should be given to water of underground sources of potable water supply to the population, reliably protected from biological, chemical and radiation pollution. The hygienic assessment of the safety and quality of potable water shall be performed according to indicators of epidemic safety (microbiological, parasitological), sanitary-chemical (organoleptic, physic-chemical, sanitary-toxicological) and radiation indicators specified in Annexes 1-3.
