Abstract
Report on updating Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) is a nationwide multi-sectoral policy document aimed at a long-term goal to contribute to the global combating climate change and a number of medium-term goals. This Report analyzes different development trajectories of the Ukrainian economy and assesses the consequences of the introduction of different sets of policies and measures on GHG costs and dynamics of GHG emissions. This Report describes the approach and the obtained results of modeling of emission trajectories of greenhouse gases until 2050 in accordance with the forecast based on models and tools available in Ukraine. Economically optimal solution for fuel structure and set of technologies is evaluated using a mathematical model based on analysis of alternative technologies for the production, supply and consumption of heat energy, as well as energy saving measures, taking into account the imposed restrictions on energy/environmental policies.
In the agricultural sector, higher rates of development will be performed by livestock production, while the possibility of a significant increase in crop production in Ukraine are limited by natural and climatic conditions. In general, by 2050 agricultural production is expected to increase by 2.6-2.7 times. The products of the agricultural sector will be mainly processed in Ukraine and will lead to a significant increase in food production and increase in the share of food production from 3.3% to 4.5%. In agriculture have been identified five sub-sectors: crop production, animal husbandry, local transport, non-energy consumption and other needs. The model assumes potential ability to meet the energy needs of each of the selected subsectors of agricultural sector using technologies that use biofuels (biomass), and also electricity and heat from renewable energy sources.
In forestry, further growth in timber extraction is expected due to increased demand. Assumptions have been made about maintaining the current practice of felling, according to which half of the extracted timber was harvested from main use felling.
Report proposes changes in the following areas: (a) increasing the installed capacity of power generation from renewable energy sources (RES); (b) introduction of the latest technologies, such as hydrogen, carbon capture and disposal, etc. (c) significant increase in energy efficiency in buildings; (d) increasing the level of electrification of transport; (d) improving waste management practices and water use; (e) increase in the cultivation of organic crops and reduction of methane in agriculture; and (f) increasing the level of absorption through afforestation.
