Abstract
The scope of the Program for the Prospective Development of Nature Conservation is to improve conditions for the preservation of territories and objects of the nature reserve fund as a national heritage, to ensure further scientifically sound development of nature reserve issues on the basis of recognition of its social, economic and ecological significance for the sustainable development of the state and people of Ukraine.
The system of measures envisaged by the Program is aimed at preserving unique and typical landscapes, other natural complexes, biological diversity, including the gene pool of flora and fauna, and increasing the role of protected areas in developing the scientific foundations of rational nature management and protection, development of natural sciences, environmental monitoring, training of highly qualified specialists, environmental and patriotic education of citizens.
The Program involves solving the following main tasks: (a) defining a strategy for the development of protected areas; (b) strengthening the scientific, organizational, legal, financial, material and technical and other foundations of the development of protected areas; (c) optimization of the network of natural and biosphere reserves, national natural parks, territories and objects of the nature reserve fund of other categories; (d) intensification of scientific research based on protected areas, strengthening the role of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Ukraine in scientific and methodological support and coordination of work in reserves and national natural parks, development of scientific and organizational principles of nature reserves; and (e) promoting the role of nature reserves in the environmental and patriotic education of citizens and the training of specialists, and Ukraine's entry into the international system of cooperation on the development of nature reserves.
