Strategy for Low Carbon Development of Ukraine up to 2050.

The Strategy for Low Carbon Development (SLCD) defines a coordinated approach by parties concerned that have a national vision for separating further economic growth and social development of the state from the increase of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). For Ukraine, the development of the SLCD is the first experience of applying the synergistic approach, since addressing climate change requires significant changes in key areas of economy and the basic components of human life. SLCD is based on the priorities of sustainable development of the sectors of national economy in order to ensure economic growth by reduction of emissions and increase of GHG absorption. This policy document is multi-sectoral.
The strategic objective is transition to the energy system, which involves the use of energy sources from low carbon content, the development of clean electricity and heat sources, sub-energy efficiency and energy saving in all sectors of the economy and of housing and communal infrastructure, encouraging the use of alternative energy sources in respect of petroleum products for motor fuels, including for freight and passenger transportation as a result of more environmentally friendly modes of transport. SLCD prospects increase in carbon capture and storage by applying best practices in farming and forestry adapted to climate change and envisages GHG emission reductions, such as methane and nitrous oxide (N2O), originating mainly from fossil fuels extraction and management, agriculture and waste management.
It also establishes as an objective improvement of energy efficiency of residential housing facilities and introduction of energy saving technologies in agriculture. Special attention is paid to carbon sequestration and GHG emission reduction in forestry sector.
