Abstract
The Local Economic Development Policy of Uganda, introduced in February 2014 by the Ministry of Local Government, aims to create a vibrant and competitive private sector-led local economy for poverty reduction, wealth creation, and prosperity. The policy focuses on promoting a conducive economic and political environment for private sector investment, employment creation, and improved household incomes. It also emphasizes the importance of effective business-oriented locality development with a focus on poverty reduction and sustainable wealth creation. The policy is guided by principles such as promoting public private partnerships, enhancing access to financial resources, investing in research and development, and improving governance mechanisms at both local and national levels. Challenges identified in the document include issues like delayed payments to suppliers, limited access to financial resources, high transport costs, and inadequate investment in research and development. Despite these challenges, the government is committed to supporting the private sector as the engine of economic growth and development in Uganda.
