The National Environment (Air Quality Standards) Regulations, 2024 comprehensively regulate air quality to protect public health and the environment by setting standards and controls on air pollution. The regulations cover a wide range of provisions including general prohibitions against harmful emissions, ambient air quality standards, and specific controls on emissions from stationary and mobile sources. They mandate measures for reducing fugitive emissions, regulate open burning, odorous emissions, and control transboundary air pollution. The regulations also set occupational and indoor air quality emission limits to protect workers and building occupants. Furthermore, they require air quality monitoring and management plans, classification of air quality zones, and compliance monitoring by operators. The legislation includes licensing mechanisms for pollution control, administrative enforcement measures, and penalties for violations, emphasizing proactive management of air pollution sources to improve air quality nationwide.
