Abstract
The Sugar Act (Uganda) establishes the legal framework for regulating Uganda’s sugar industry. The Uganda Sugar Board is responsible for regulating, developing, and promoting the sugar industry in Uganda while coordinating the activities of stakeholders such as growers, millers, and government agencies. It also licenses sugar mills, collects industry statistics, monitors the sugar market, and mediates disputes between parties in the sector. Additionally, the Board promotes exports, environmentally friendly technologies, innovation, and policies that support the sustainable growth of the sugar industry. The Uganda Sugar Board, working with relevant regulatory bodies, must ensure that all sugar produced locally or imported into Uganda complies with national quality, public health, and environmental standards. The Act regulates the production, processing, and marketing of sugar to ensure fair competition and sustainable industry development. It also sets rules for agreements between sugar millers and sugarcane growers, including matters like cane supply and pricing.
