Abstract
This Subpart of Part 216 of the Code of Federal Regulations (Regulations governing the taking and importing of marine mammals) allows residents of the Pribilof Islands to take fur seals on the Pribilof Islands if such taking is (a) for subsistence uses, and (b) not accomplished in a wasteful manner. Taking of seals shall be subject to certain conditions. Any harvest of sub adult or adult fur seals or intentional harvest of young of the year female fur seals is prohibited. Federal scientists and Pribilovians cooperatively manage the subsistence harvest of northern fur seals under section 119 of the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Representatives of Federally recognized tribes on the Pribilof Islands are involved in conservation and management of fur seals.
