Abstract
This Part of Title 50 provides for the proper use and management of all Alaska National Wildlife Refuges and supplements the general National Wildlife Refuge System regulations. This part shall apply only to federally-owned lands within the boundaries of any Alaska National Wildlife Refuge. § 36.11 lays down regulations regarding the customary and traditional uses by rural Alaska residents of wild, renewable resources for direct personal or family consumption as food, shelter, fuel, clothing, tools, or transportation. Consistent with sound management principles and the conservation of healthy populations of fish and wildlife, the utilization of Alaska National Wildlife Refuges is to cause the least adverse impact possible on local rural residents who depend upon subsistence uses of the resources of the public lands in Alaska.
According to § 36.13, fish may be taken by local rural residents for subsistence uses in compliance with applicable State and Federal law. § 36.14 allows for subsistence hunting and trapping and § 36.15 permits the noncommercial cutting of live standing timber by local rural residents for appropriate subsistence uses. Subpart D authorizes public recreational activities and taking of fish and wildlife for sport hunting, trapping, and sport fishing. Subpart E lays down refuge specific regulations. Subpart F provides for the issuance and administration of competitively and noncompetitively issued permits for economic and/or other privileged uses on all national wildlife refuges in Alaska.
