Abstract
This Strategic Plan, aligned with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOOA) Fisheries’ 2019–2022 National Strategic Plan, provides a framework for describing the roles and responsibilities of Alaska fishery agencies and organisations in protecting and sustainably managing fisheries and marine resources in the State. The Strategic Plan aims at ensuring: productive and sustainable fisheries, mariculture, safe sources of seafood, the recovery and conservation of protected resources, and healthy ecosystems. In order to implement its vision, this Strategic Plan defines three strategic goals: strengthening the economic value of commercial and recreational fisheries while ensuring their sustainability; conservation and recovery of protected species while supporting responsible fishing and resource development; improving organisational excellence and regulatory efficiency, and support the socio-economic well-being of fisheries and fishing communities. These goals are followed by the following targeted actions and measures: stock management, and assessment of all prioritised stocks; increasing mariculture production; enhancement of cooperative data collection and sharing, and modernisation of fishery information collection; combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and seafood fraud; promoting ecosystem-based fishery management; minimising bycatch and entanglement of protected species while supporting fisheries.
