Abstract
Part 179 of Title 21 of the Federal Code of Regulations prescribes various provisions aimed to define and regulate the necessary food safety and food labelling provisions regarding the irradiation in production, processing and handling of food for human consumption.
This Regulation closely determines the types radiation sources and packaging materials for irradiated foods. Sources of radiation used for inspection of food, for inspection of packaged food, and for controlling food processing; ionizing radiation for the treatment of food; radiofrequency radiation for the heating of food, including microwave frequencies; ultraviolet radiation for the processing and treatment of food are also defined by this Regulation.
