Abstract
This Strategic Plan provides scientifically reliable data to help reduce the human, animal and environmental health burden caused by antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, and to enable antimicrobials to be more effective for treating human and animal infections. In order to accomplish its vision, the Strategic Plan defines the following activities: monitoring trends in antimicrobial resistance among enteric bacteria from humans, retail meats, and animals at the time of slaughter; spreading information on antimicrobial resistance in pathogenic and commensal microorganisms to stakeholders in the U.S. and abroad; conducting research to better understand the emergence of antimicrobial resistance; providing data that assist the competent authorities in making decisions related to the approval of safe and effective antimicrobial drugs for animals. The Strategy identifies the following strategic goals with related objectives and actions: sampling for foodborne pathogens within a One Health framework; development of technologies to better understand the evolution of resistance among pathogens; improving data sharing and communication.
