Abstract
The Supporting Antimicrobial Stewardship in Veterinary Settings - Goals for Fiscal Years 2019 – 2023 is a national sectoral plan of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) of the United States. Its main objectives are to align antimicrobial drug product use with the principles of antimicrobial stewardship; to foster stewardship of antimicrobials in veterinary settings; and to enhance monitoring of antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial drug use in animals.
More specifically, the document provides to revise, as necessary, the use conditions for approved medically important antimicrobials in food-producing animals; develop and implement a strategy for promoting antimicrobial stewardship in companion animals; enhance processes to support new product development; support outreach and education by providing information on antimicrobial stewardship; strengthen CVM compliance program activities to support antimicrobial stewardship; support international outreach and collaboration to foster antimicrobial stewardship in veterinary settings; collect and analyze data on antimicrobial drug use in animals; enhance the collection and analysis of antimicrobial resistance data; increase data sharing and reporting to aid in the monitoring of antimicrobial drug use practices and resistance.
