Abstract
The U.S. Geological Survey Natural Hazards Science Strategy is a national sectoral strategy of the United States of America. It states that the mission of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in natural hazards is to develop and apply hazard science to help protect the safety, security, and economic well-being of the Nation.
More specifically, the Strategy aims to acquire comprehensive observations impor¬tant to natural hazards to improve fundamental understanding, assessments, and situational awareness; advance and apply fundamental under¬standing of natural hazards to improve assessments and situ¬ational awareness; develop assessments of natural hazards, vulnerability and risk to inform decisions that can mitigate adverse consequences; and provide situational awareness to improve emergency response, inform the public, and minimize societal disruption.
