Abstract
This Resolution establishes measures to develop and promote geographical indications (GIs) as part of the country's intellectual property strategy. It creates the non-governmental institution “Origin Uzbekistan”, founded by Tashkent State University of Law, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Hunarmand Association. Its responsibilities include assisting businesses with identifying and registering geographical indications, raising public awareness, promoting Uzbek geographical indications abroad, supporting commercialization, analyzing legal protection mechanisms, and proposing legislative improvements.
The resolution defines the financing and operational framework for “Origin Uzbekistan”. Funding may come from founders, charitable donations, international organizations, grants, state social procurement contracts, and other lawful sources. The institution is provided premises by the Ministry of Justice and may receive support for equipment, international membership, and participation in exhibitions, training events, and business forums.
A significant part of the resolution digitalizes the Ministry of Justice’s Appeals Council procedures through the Intellectual Property Protection Portal, expands opportunities to submit applications through public service centers, strengthens intellectual property compliance requirements, introduces procedures for registering pledges of intellectual property rights, and incorporate intellectual property indicators into business sustainability ratings. The provisions also update regulations concerning geographical indications, trademarks, certification procedures, patent protection documents, licensing agreements, and the registration of contracts involving intellectual property rights, with the aim of improving protection, commercialization, and administration of intellectual property in the national territory.
