Abstract
An Act to provide for the establishment of the Maritime Authority of Vanuatu and a Maritime Appeal Tribunal, and appointment of a Commissioner of Maritime Affairs, and related matters. The Vanuatu Maritime Authority is established under section 3 as a body corporate. The Authority shall, among other duties, ensure compliance with the law in respect of the registration, licensing, operation and crewing of vessels, promote compliance with marine pollution prevention standards in the maritime transport industry, and; to promote Vanuatu's preparedness for, and ability to respond to, occurrences resulting in the pollution of the marine environment. The Authority shall appoint a person as the Commissioner of Maritime Affairs with consent of the Minister (sect. 12). Tasks of the Commissioner are outlined in section 13. The Maritime Appeal Tribunal is established under section 42. The Tribunal shall hear matters as provided for in the Shipping Act and the Maritime Act and Maritime Regulations.
