Abstract
Samoa's National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance 2023-2028 is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at addressing the growing concern of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the country. The plan outlines specific goals and objectives to combat AMR, including ensuring the availability and appropriate use of consumables and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), promoting vaccination programs in commercial farms, and optimizing the use of antimicrobials. One of the key objectives is to strengthen infection prevention and control measures, with a focus on improving hygiene and sanitation practices in both community and healthcare settings. This includes reactivating the Komiti tumāmā concept in villages to ensure good sanitation practices and regular monitoring of hygiene standards. The plan also emphasizes the importance of promoting the rational use of antimicrobials in human and animal health through the implementation of the National Medicines Policy 2022. This involves educating healthcare professionals and consumers on the appropriate use of antimicrobials, strengthening procurement and supply chains, and developing antimicrobial stewardship programs in hospitals.
