Republican decree No. 16 of 2008 for the regulation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation.

This Regulation aims to restructure the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation. Purpose of the Ministry is to develop and well-exploit the local agricultural resources and potentialities to satisfy the needs of citizens and the national economy, so as to contribute to achieve food security and a comprehensive sustainable development of the community.
The Regulation consists of 4 Sections divided in 37 articles. Name, objectives and competencies (I); Ministry leadership (II); The Ministry’s Organizational Organigram (III); General Provisions (IV).
The core of the Law is in Section III indicating the Ministry’s Organizational Structure (Chap.1) and Duties and functions of the general departments within each sector (Chap.2-with its three sub-sections). While in the previous law General Departments were under control of the Ministry or his Assistant Undersecretary, the new law encourages decentralization with the creation of four central pillars (the Ministry, Development of agricultural production sector, Agricultural services sector, Irrigation and land reclamation sector). On the four sectors depend the various General Departments. Each sector is headed by a Undersecretary of the Ministry and every General Department has a general director.
