Animal Identification Act (No. 6 of 2002).

This Act applies in respect of animals declared by the Minister of Agriculture by Notice in the Gazette and to the whole of the national territory of South Africa. The Minister shall designate under section 3 an officer of the national Department of Agriculture as the Registrar of Animal Identification. Also, the Minister shall prescribe identification marks un respect of each group of animals to which, upon application, identification marks are allocated and, subsequently, registered. The owner of animals is required to apply for an identification mark and mark his or her animals clearly with the assigned mark. An owner may apply for an alternative method of identification under section 8. Identification marks may be transferred. Commercial marking operators shall be registered with the Registrar (sect. 11). Powers of entry and other powers of enforcement of officers appointed by the registrar are defined in section 12. Appeal may be had against decisions of the Registrar under section 13. Section 15 prohibits certain marking of animals. Regulation making powers of the Minister are set out in section 18.
