Abstract
This Management Plan for the Cape mountain zebra is aimed at identifying and undertaking the required actions in order to ensure the long term survival of the subspecies in nature and thereby ensure the sustainable economic incentive for private land owners participating in the meta-population strategy, considering that Cape mountain zebra is listed as Vulnerable (D1) by the IUCN and on Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Therefore, the vision of this Management Plan is the scientifically conservation and regulation of an ecologically healthy and genetically diverse meta-population of Cape mountain zebra. With this in mind, the Management Plan focuses on the following goals, actions and strategies to strengthen the overall population performance, distribution and genetic diversity: conservation of the Cape mountain zebra meta-population; improving knowledge and understanding regarding the genetic diversity of the meta-population; eliminating risk for genetic contamination due to hybridisation with other equine species and maintaining genetic diversity in the meta-population; managing the impact of current and emerging diseases; long-term monitoring of meta-population dynamics and habitat; ensuring effective communication, collaboration and coordination between stakeholders, animal welfare organisations and the public for the conservation of the species, through targeted investment.
