Abstract
This Biodiversity Management Plan, made in compliance with the provisions of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act, No. 10 of 2004, provides for the conservation planning of the Southern Ground-Hornbill, one of the swiftest declining bird species in South Africa, whose protection is an international and national concern. Therefore, the vision of this Biodiversity Management Plan focuses on: an increasing and healthy population with conservation and cultural value in the Southern Ground-Hornbill. The Management Plan aims at achieving the following goals and objectives: managing the impact of current threats, including emerging diseases; long-term monitoring of the dynamics and habitat of the species’ population; communication, collaboration, and coordination among stakeholders; protecting the remaining wild population, in order to increase the growth and down list the species from endangered to vulnerable; strengthening the integration of cultural and ecological values in the conservation of the species; incorporating the indigenous knowledge systems into conservation planning.
