Abstract
These national norm and standards are issued under the Biodiversity Act to ensure the long term survival of elephants within their ecosystem and the proper management and protection of elephants and management and protection of the ecosystem in which they occur.
The norms and standards set out guiding principles for the management of elephants and stipulate that no restricted activities in terms of the Biodiversity Act involving an elephant may be undertaken without a permit issued in terms of Regulation 18 of the Threatened or Protected Species Regulations.
The norms and standards further make provision for: capture and keeping of elephants in captivity, management of elephants in the wild and hunting of elephants.
