National Water Action Plan.

This South Africa’s National Water Action Plan has been launched in response to the country's water crisis. The Plan, developed by the National Water Crisis Committee (WATERCOM), sets out a variety of actions to ensure a reliable supply of quality water to all citizens of South Africa. It outlines strategic interventions to address the water crisis over the short, medium and long term to address structural weaknesses in the current service delivery model, contributing to deteriorating infrastructure, rising water losses, and inadequate maintenance, metering, billing, and revenue collection. WATERCOM, chaired by the President of South Africa, will meet regularly to oversee the implementation of the Plan and to hold the responsible departments and agencies accountable for delivery.
The National Water Action Plan sets out five areas of intervention, each with dedicated teams and clear priorities. These are: Address challenges in municipal water and sanitation delivery; Expedite reforms to address the systemic causes of the water crisis; Increase investment in infrastructure, including through private sector investment; Explore legal and regulatory mechanisms to improve municipal service delivery; Address corruption and criminality in the water sector. One of the main legislative actions is the reform of the Water Services Act. A National Water Resource Infrastructure Agency will be established. WATERCOM will provide a central platform to co-ordinate the many stakeholders involved, track progress in real time, and maintain a sense of urgency.
