Abstract
This Sectoral Determination of the Minister of Labour, made in terms of section 51(1) of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, 1997, establishes conditions of employment and wages for employers and employees in the Forestry Sector. The Determination defines forestry operations as activities related to planting, growing, tending and harvesting of trees and involving: commercial timber growers, all transportation within the sector, a domestic worker employed in a home on a plantation where forestry activities take place, a security guard employed to guard a plantation or other premises where forestry activities are conducted. The Determination covers the following matters: remuneration, minimum wages and tax-based payments; particulars of employment; hours of work, including emergency work and extension of ordinary hours of work; leave, for sanitary, family responsibility, maternity reasons; prohibition of child labour and forced labour; termination of employment; maintenance and protection of natural forests.
