Abstract
The "Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act" is a legislative document from Zimbabwe aimed at providing a structured and comprehensive framework for criminal law within the country. The Act is divided into several chapters that address various aspects of criminal law, including: Preliminary Provisions - Definitions, interpretations, and territorial scope of crimes. Criminal Liability - Elements such as criminal capacity, conduct, states of mind, and proof of liability. Crimes Against the State - Offenses including treason, subverting constitutional government, terrorism, and related activities. Crimes Against Public Order - Acts such as public violence, disorderly conduct, and possession of offensive weapons. Crimes Against the Person - Categories include homicide, sexual crimes, bodily injury, and offenses against liberty and dignity. Property Crimes - Theft, fraud, extortion, robbery, and property damage, along with related offenses. The Act outlines specific offenses, their definitions, and guidelines for prosecution, providing clarity on criminal responsibility and the judicial process. It serves as a codification of criminal law principles to replace prior reliance on Roman-Dutch law and other fragmented legal systems.
