Abstract
The Multi-Sectoral Food and Nutrition Security Strategy aims to promote and ensure adequate food and nutrition security for all people at all times in Zimbabwe, particularly amongst the most vulnerable and in line with our cultural norms and values and the concept of rebuilding and maintaining family dignity. The key result areas of the Strategy are: (I) policy analysis and advice, (II) agriculture and food security, (III) social protection, (IV) food safety, quality and standards, (V) nutrition security, (VI) food and nutrition information: assessment, analysis and early warning, and (VII) enhancing and strengthening capacities for food and nutrition security.
The strategy prioritizes improving the food security and nutritional status of its citizens, with a special emphasis on the health, agriculture, livestock, water and sanitation sectors. It focuses on policy analysis and advocacy to ensure effective policies are in place to support food and nutrition security. This includes developing and implementing policies that promote sustainable agricultural practices, improve access to nutritious food, and support vulnerable populations through social protection programs. The goal is to create an enabling environment for food and nutrition security through evidence-based policy-making and strong advocacy efforts.
The strategy emphasizes the importance of food safety, quality, and standards to ensure that the food consumed is safe and nutritious. This involves setting and enforcing food safety regulations, improving food quality control systems, and promoting best practices in food production and handling. Additionally, the strategy aims to enhance nutrition security by addressing malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies through targeted interventions. Reliable food and nutrition information systems are also crucial for monitoring progress and making informed decisions.
The capacities for food and nutrition security will be strengthened by building the skills and knowledge of stakeholders at all levels, from policymakers to community members, to effectively address food and nutrition challenges. Building resilience is another important goal, with a focus on helping communities withstand and recover from shocks such as natural disasters and economic crises. Finally, efficient monitoring systems are essential to track the implementation of the strategy and ensure that progress is being made towards achieving food and nutrition security goals.
