Abstract
The Zimbabwe Integrated Tick and Tick-borne disease control strategy 2022 - 2030 has as objective to sustainably control tick-borne diseases in ruminant livestock in the country as one of the key strategic interventions specified in the Zimbabwe Livestock Growth Plan. To achieve optimal results, the strategic interventions are best implemented as a unit as they complement one another. Under each strategic intervention, timelines for the achievement of the various intervention points have been set as follows: Short Term (1 year), Medium Term (2-3 years) and Long Term (4-5 years).
Strategic intervention (SI) 1 encompasses actions focused on prompt diagnosis and provision of early treatment. SI 2 entails initiatives aimed at effective integrated tick control mechanisms. SI 3 promotes community participation and ownership prioritizing farmers’ groups/associations, ensuring gender equity in community groups, etc. SI 4 envisages involvement of private sector. SI 5 encourages improved monitoring, planning and evaluation at high, medium and low levels. SI 6 recognizes a need for legislation and regulatory framework review due in particular to systematic flaws in identification and traceability of the origin of livestock. SI 7 focuses on vaccination and immunization. SI 8 lay down the basis for human resource and capacity building programms and initiatives. SI 9 prioritize the establishment and maintenance of infrastructure & Equipment. SI 10 and SI 11 are respectively focused one research and financial support.
