Abstract
This National Strategy and Action Plan (NSAP) on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (PGFRA) provides operational guidelines to promote conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture. It consists of six chapters: 1. Introduction; 2. Background; 3. Goal, Objectives and Guiding Principles; 4. Components, Priority Areas, Strategies and Activities; 5. Monitoring and Evaluation Plan; and 6. Implementation Matrix.
Chapter 1 contains the introduction and rationale for the NSAP. Chapter 2 provides for the background, national and regional context, international conventions and treaties on PGRFA and the institutional arrangements. Chapter 4 lays down the six core components of the NSAP: 1. Conservation and sustainable use of PGRFA; 2. Legal and institutional framework for the management of PGRFA; 3. PGRFA Research and Development; 4. Capacity Development, Coordination and Communication for PGRFA conservation and sustainable use; 5. Resource mobilization for PGRFA conservation and sustainable use; and 6. PGRFA Management under disaster situations. Each component further contains priority areas and related strategies. Chapter 5 contains the monitoring and evaluation plan for each of the six components of the NSAP.
