Abstract
The purpose of the Zimbabwe Vulture Action Plan 2018-2022 is to encourage multi-sectoral, national, regional and international collaboration to address threats to vultures. lt also encompasses awareness raising of the plight of vultures, their ecological importance and valuable ecosystem services, and propose solutions for African vulture conservation at the highest levels both nationally and regionally.
The development of the Action Plan used thematic areas both for the identification of threats and the development of objectives, projects and activities. These are: 1. Poisoning - Improve handling and reporting of poisoning incidences (database, protocols, response system, hotline); restricted access to hazardous substances; etc. 2. Education & Awareness - Materials developed and distributed, engagement strategy. 3. Research & Monitoring - improve knowledge on vulture distribution, on its biology and ecology, threats and values of vulture to ecosystem and people. 4. Habitat & Land Use - Assessment of vulture habitat and food source status. 5. Policy & Legislation - Formation of Vulture Working Group Structure and review of legislation. 6. Infrastructure - infrastructure threats defined and interim plan to mitigate these in place.
