Packaging in which the waste shall be of such a nature that it is capable of undergoing physical, chemical, thermal or biological decomposition such that most of the finished compost ultimately decomposes into carbon dioxide, biomass and water; Plastic polymers that can be metabolized by microorganisms (enzymes such as bacteria and fungi) into water, carbon dioxide and biomass under aerobic conditions and methane under anaerobic conditions. Whether a plastic material is biodegradable depends on its chemical structure (not on the feedstock from which it is produced, which can be either a fossil fuel or bio-based) and on the environmental conditions in which the material ends up.
