Law 13/2012, of July 12, on tenure and animal protection.

This law consists of 6 titles. Title 1 defines the object of the law, which is to establish rules for the protection of animals, for the keeping, handling, trade and use of domestic animals, both farm and livestock, and wild animals, whether native or non-native. The purpose of this law is to achieve the highest level of protection and welfare of animals and to encourage greater responsibility and better behavior civic behavior of the citizenry in the defense and conservation of animals. This Title also analyses the obligations for the animal's owners; the conditions for their transport, import and export; forbidden actions and activities
Title 2 covers the healthcare conditions: the control over it, the epizootics and zoonoses, the communication of diseases, the experimentation and the exhibitions, competitions and any demonstration with presence of animals.
Title 3 is about domestic animals, either pet animals or livestock while Title 4 is about wild fauna. This latter includes provisions concerning the protection of wild fauna, either native or non native with a particular focus on protected species.
Inspections and offences and penalties are the object of, respectively, Titles 5 and 6.
