Abstract
Purpose of this Law is to recognize the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority as the responsible body in regulating food and its handling throughout the food chain in order to: protect the consumer’s health against any health hazards resulting from consuming food not compliant with the standards; organize the activities pertaining to food handling throughout the food chain and ensure their compliance with the standard specifications, requirements and regulations issued by the Authority; enhance the consumer’s confidence in the Emirate control systems and contribute to raising the level of food awareness; set the necessary technical frameworks and required legislations for organizing food trade and enhance the competency of the food industry and commercial sectors in a manner that would support the national economy.
The Law consists of 21 articles divided in 4 chapters, as follows: General Provisions (1); Management, Implementation and Responsibilities of the officer in-charge (2); Legal Proceedings and Penalties (3); Final Provisions (4).
Chapter 1 deals with licensing system and safety and quality rules for all food establishments within the Emirates. Chapter 2 indicates the Authority’s responsibilities regarding imported and exported food, powers and duties of Board of Director, Director General and officers-in-charge.
Article 16 of Chapter 3 establishes penalties for various violations of the provisions of this Law.
