Abstract
The area to which this Protocol applies shall be the area of the Mediterranean Sea as delimited in Article 1 of the Convention. Each Party shall take the necessary measures to (a) protect, preserve and manage in a sustainable and environmentally sound way areas of particular natural or cultural value, notably by the establishment of specially protected areas; (b) protect, preserve and manage threatened or endangered species of flora and fauna. Specially protected areas are hereby established and the Parties shall, in accordance with the rules of international law, adopt planning, management, supervision and monitoring measures for these areas. A list of specially protected areas of Mediterranean importance (SPAMI) shall be established in accordance with the criteria set in Annex I. The Parties shall manage species of flora and fauna with the aim of maintaining them in a favourable state of conservation. A list of endangered or threatened species is also set in Annex II; Annex III contains the list of species whose exploitation is regulated. (32 articles and 3 Annexes)

Entry into force notes
This Protocol shall enter into force 30 days after the deposit of the sixth instrument of ratification, acceptance or approval of, or accession to, the Protocol.
