Abstract
The purpose of this Regulation is to ensure a high level of consumer protection through offering more information on food based on the differences in consumer perception and their need for information, while also ensuring normal market functioning. To this end, the regulation lays down general principles and requirements, rules of procedure regarding information on food and food labeling and legal safeguards to guarantee consumers rights in these domains. The regulation is partially approximated with EU Regulation 1169/2011. The Regulation 434 of 2018 is composed of the following chapters: I - General Provisions, II- General Principles of Information on Food, III- General Requirements on Food Information and Responsibilities of the Food Business Operators, IV- Mandatory Information on Food, V- Voluntary Information on Food, and VI- Transitory and Final Provisions. Additional rules and requirements for specific types of food are laid down in separate addenda attached to the document. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the National Food Authority share enforcement responsibility.
