Abstract
The purpose of this Act, consisting of 76 articles, is to legislate on the professional order of veterinarians in Austria, on the duties of veterinarians and on their professional representation, through the association of veterinarians.
The practice of veterinary profession is reserved exclusively for veterinarians. The Act does not apply to: powers conferred on doctors; activities in the field of scientific and didactic research conducted state research institutes; other persons who inspect animals for slaughter and meat as well as artificial insemination of domestic animals; activities subject to commercial legislation; the powers to conduct animal experiments.
The Act prescribes for requirements necessary to practice veterinary profession, establishes the Federal Body, responsible for listing all the veterinarians authorized to practice in Austria and for their disciplinary and professional evaluation and work organization, and veterinary chambers in order to represent and promote the economic and professional interests of veterinarians.
Article 12 explicitly indicates the activities that a veterinarian can carry out: examination and treatment of animals; medical preventive measures against diseases in animals; surgical interventions on animals; vaccination, injection, transfusion, infusion, instillation and blood draw in animals; prescribing medicinal products for animals; ante-mortem and post-mortem inspection; issuance of veterinary certificates and reports; artificial insemination of pets. The Act prevents a veterinary from visiting animals for the purpose of offering veterinary services without a request from the animal owner.
Articles 53-60 concern disciplinary offences and consequent disciplinary penalties from members of the Chambers and from veterinarians.

Entry into force notes
The provisions of Sections 53 to 60 come into force on January 1, 1975; the other provisions of this Federal Act comes into force the first day of the month following the announcement.
