Abstract
This Act, consisting of 216 sections divided into ten Parts and completed by two Schedules, establishes the following: "Vessel" includes (a) an air-cushioned vehicle; (b) an off-shore industry mobile unit; and (c) a boat, vessel, barge or lighter or any other craft capable of being used as a means of transportation by water. The Minister may, by instrument in writing, appoint a person to be a shipping inspector for the purposes of this Act (sect. 8). A Tribunal by the name of the Marine Appeals Tribunal of the Northern Territory is established under section 10. The function of the Tribunal is to hear and determine appeals submitted to it under this Act. The Act further provides for crew and manning of vessels, safety of vessels, certificates of survey, pilotage, licensing of certain commercial operations, marine navigational aids and prescribes offences.

Entry into force notes
This Act enters into force on 2 November 1981.
Notes
The Acts of South Australia listed in Part I of Schedule 1 shall, to the extent therein indicted, cease to apply as laws of the Territory. The Ordinances listed in Part II of Schedule 1 are repealed to the extent therein indicated.Last amendments up to Transport Legislation Amendment Act2022(Act No. 1, 2022). As in force at 4 May 2022.
