Abstract
This Act concerns the management of the River Murray basin. The objective of the Act is to ensure that all reasonable and practicable measures are taken to protect, restore and enhance the River Murray in recognition of its critical importance to the South Australian community and its unique value from environmental, economic and social perspectives and to provide for the sustainable use and development of its resources. For the purposes of this Act, the Governor has the power to designate areas as River Murray Protection Areas. The Act provides for monitoring of the conditions of the river and its environment, for inspection and most of all for the planning of activities and development in the area. Under section 23, a general duty of care is formulated: a person must take all reasonable measures to prevent or minimize any harm to the River Murray through his or her actions or activities and detailed duties are indicated.
