The Iodized Salt Act, 2021 (Act No. 08 of 2021).

This Act makes provisions for prevention of diseases caused by iodine deficiencies through iodisation of salt. In order to fulfil the purpose of this Act, there shall be a National Salt Committee (Committee) established. The duties and functions of the Committee are laid down, which include: a) making recommendations on the policy of production, processing, iodization, storage, sale, transportation, supply of iodine to salt factories, import and management; b) designing strategies for prevention of iodine deficiency diseases; c) making recommendations regarding the adoption of necessary measures to make the use of iodized salt compulsory in industries manufacturing foodstuff for human and animals; d) making necessary recommendations for the modernization and expansion of salt research and salt industry; e) encouraging the public to purchase iodized salt; and f) making recommendations for fixing national iodine standards and levels required for human and animal health.
The Act establishes the Iodized Salt Monitoring and Implementation Cell to implement the act and monitoring of activities related to production, refining and supply of iodized salt. The government shall, in consultation with the Committee, determine a national standard and range of iodine following the international standard of iodized salt and necessary range for public health. The provisions in respect of production, packaging and labelling of iodised salt, supply of iodine, training to producers, registration for import and production, inspection and monitoring are made. A Salt Research Institute is established and the Act provides for establishment of salt processing industrial areas.
