This Treaty is about: regulation of water flows of the Maas via the Zuid-Willems canal in Maastricht; obligation of the Parties to reduce water losses of the Maas on their territory, especially in case of low water; the cooperation in the research and development of the Common Maas; compensation of the freshwater flows. Water flows go upstream from the Netherlands to Belgium and from Belgium further downstream to The Netherlands. The Parties shall cooperate in hydrological research and measures as specified. As to compensation of loss of water flows, due to narrowing or enlarging of the riverbed, this shall be compensated in such a way that no harm to the other Party shall occur.
