Abstract
This Law, consisting of 11 Chapters, creates the basic norms to control and regulate food sector. It regulates nationwide the requirements to be satisfied for defending and protecting individual and collective health in relation to food, from realization to consumption. It is divided as follows and specifies food registration and control (Chap. II); Labelling and packaging (Chap. III); Food additives (Chap. IV); Identity and Quality Standards (Chap. V); Inspection (Chap. VI); Administrative proceedings (Chap. VII); Offences and penalties (Chap. VIII); Infrastructures (Chap. IX); General provisions (Chap. X); Final provisions (Chap. XI).

Entry into force notes
This Decree-Law enters into force on the day of its publication.
Notes
This Decree-Law repeals Decree-Law No. 209 of 27 February 1967.This Decree-Law has been consolidated as at Law No. 13.305 of 4 July 2016, adding art. 19-A to provide for the labelling of food containing lactose.
