Decree No. 12.512 creating the Brazilian Food Bank Network.

This Decree creates the Brazilian Food Bank Network (RBBA), with the aim of integrating and strengthening food banks in the country through intersectoral coordination with different agencies and entities working in the field of food and nutritional security, with a view to promoting the reduction of food waste and guaranteeing the human right to adequate and healthy food. These food banks are physical or logistical structures, public or private, non-profit, that offer free services for the collection, reception, and distribution of food from donations from the public or private sectors, with an emphasis on the sustainable management of available food and with a priority focus on combating food loss and waste and directing donations to food-insecure families.
The objectives of the RBBA are: reduce food loss and waste in the country; combat hunger and food insecurity; reduce the environmental impact of organic waste; increase the technical and operational capacity of food banks participating in the RBBA through technological tools; promote educational activities related to adequate and healthy eating; spread knowledge about food banks among the Brazilian population and encourage donations and volunteer work at food banks; promote the collection and distribution of food, prioritizing fresh, minimally processed foods and culinary ingredients, in accordance with the provisions of Decree No. 11.936 of 5 March 2024; and strengthen the network of Food and Nutritional Security equipment.
