Abstract
This Law, consisting of 12 articles creates the State Policy for Agroecology and Organic Production of Maranhão (Peapoma). The Policy aims at promoting Agroecology and Organic Production as a way to broaden and strengthen the Maranhão agricultural sector, enhancing its capacity to fulfill multiple functions of public interest in the sovereign production, quantity, quality and diversity of food and other socio-biodiversity products, in the preservation of cultural and natural heritage, in the dynamization of local solidarity economy networks, in the construction of just social relations between men and women and between generations, and in the recognition of ethnic diversity, contributing to the construction of a sustainable, egalitarian and democratic society.
Peapoma will be implemented by the Government of the State of Maranhão in cooperation with federal and municipal governments and civil society organizations, aiming at integrating, articulating and adapting policies, programmes and actions that encourage agroecology and organic production, considering Federal Decree No. 7.794 of 20 August 2012 establishing the National Policy on Agroecology and Organic Production.
PEAPOMA guidelines aim at: ensure the human right to adequate food, as well as food and nutritional sovereignty and security, taking into account the sustainability and diversity of local food crops; develop and encourage the structuring of circuits of production, value added and consumption adapted to the needs of peasant family farming and traditional peoples and communities in forestry giving preference to local, regional and institutional markets, increasing access to organic and agro-ecological products; guarantee the autonomy and management of peasant, urban and peri-urban family farming and traditional peoples and communities in the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources for the maintenance of agrobiodiversity; promotion of fair and sustainable systems of production, distribution and consumption of food, which improve the economic, social and environmental functions of agriculture, etc.
