Abstract
This Act makes provision for measures for the prevention and control of contagious and infectious diseases in animals and defines offences in relation with this purpose.
The Act grants powers to the Governor-General to appoint inspectors for purposes of this Act and defines powers of such inspectors. Owners of animals and veterinary surgeons shall notify authorities on the occurrence of a contagious or infectious disease affecting an animal. The Minister may order slaughter of affected animals, prohibit importation of animals, parts of animals or non-edible animal products, declare infected places, place restrictions on the movement of persons or animals from infected places or order the cleansing of means of transport and premises. The Act also defines regulation-making powers of the Minister and prescribes penalties for offences.
