Abstract
This Act provides for measures aimed at the protection of consumers and the safety of goods placed on the market in The Bahamas and for this purpose establishes the Consumer Protection Commission and grants powers to the Minister.
The Commission shall, among other things: (a) advise the Minister generally in relation to consumer issues; (b) formulate and implement standards in relation to the consumer protection policy; (c) carry out, at the request of a consumer who has been adversely affected, or at its own initiative investigations in relation to the sale of goods or the provision of services; (d) promote the development of organizations formed for the protection of the consumer; and (e) resolve disagreements between consumers and providers of goods and services. The Minister shall have powers to restrict importation or exportation of goods and to regulate the placing on the market of goods. The Act also contains provisions regarding the false or misleading advertisement or labelling of goods.
