Abstract
For the purposes of this Act, the Department of Local Government established under section 2A of the repealed Local Government Act (Ch. 37) shall continue to carry out its duties and functions. This Act lays down provisions on the appointment of the Director of Local Government and other officers; local government districts; the establishment and duties of the town committees and the Second Schedule and the Third Schedule district councils; conduct of elections; qualifications to be elected as a member of a Council or town committee; procurement by Council or town committee; appointment of Family Island Administrators and their functions; and the funds and resources of town committees and Councils.
The Bahamas shall be divided into the Districts specified in the First Schedule. The Minister may by Order divide any District specified in the Second Schedule into town areas. The functions of town committees are laid down in Section 15, including but not limited to: general health and sanitation services; deposit and collection of waste; and the upkeep and maintenance of public wells and water tanks. Each District Council shall carry out functions in the fields of port control, boat registration, land use planning, land subdivision, and licensing of hotels and businesses. The Family Island Administrator of a District shall be responsible for developing the Local Disaster Risk Management Plan and Local Disaster Emergency Plans and implementing in the event of a disaster.
