Abstract
This Act lays down provisions as regards the registration of ships, proprietary interests in registered ships, and measurement of ship and tonnage; training, certification and watchkeeping of seafarers; Maritime Labour Convention regulations; compliance with Safety Convention for maritime safety and security; prevention of pollution from ships; prevention of collisions and the safety of navigation; requirements for ships engaged in fisheries transshipment; offences in respect of ships; limitation and division of liability; salvage and wreck; surveys, inspections and enforcement; investigations of marine casualties and marine incidents; and legal proceedings and maritime liens. The Schedule of this Act lists the international conventions and regulations to be incorporated, or if incorporated into the laws of The Bahamas under the repealed Merchant Shipping Act, and the repealed Merchant Shipping (Maritime Claims Limitation of Liability) Act, to continue to have the force of law.

An Act to provide for the registration of Bahamian ships; to provide for proprietary interests in ships; to provide for training, certification and watchkeeping relating to seafarers; to provide for the conditions of employment of seafarers and the health and well-being of masters and seafarers; to provide for the prevention of collisions, the safety of navigation, the safety of cargoes, and carriage of bulk and dangerous cargoes; to provide for the prevention of pollution, maritime safety and security, the liability of shipowners, and investigations into marine casualties; to regulate and develop merchant shipping and related services; to incorporate international conventions into the laws of The Bahamas; to repeal the Merchant Shipping Act, 1976 and the Merchant Shipping (Maritime Claims Limitation of Liability) Act, 1989, and for connected purposes.
