Abstract
This Policy consists of 11 parts divided into 92 articles: Part I-Introduction; Part II-The current land tenure system; Part III-Milestones in Botswana Land Policy; Part IV-Policy goals and objectives; Part V-Land tenure; Part VI-Access to land and protection of land rights; Part VII-Land management and administration; Part VIII-Land values and market; Part IX-Institutional framework; Part X-Legal framework; Part XI-Implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
The aims and purposes of this Policy are to protect and promote land rights of all landholders; ensure that all eligible citizens have the opportunity to access and use land; encourage citizens retention of rights to land; promote equity in access to land and natural resources; improve land management system on customary, state land and freehold land to make it predictable, transparent, reliable, consistent and timeous; establish an up-to-date, efficient and accessible land information center; and promote the compatible and best use of land, and other land resources.
The Policy wants to introduce common law leases to specific land-use types, endorse the operation of a transparent land allocation system together with issues of land accessibility and affordability, especially to targeted groups of people. Moreover, the Policy takes into consideration also the administration of tribal lands.
