Abstract
This Act provides for the marking, by the method of branding, of any bull, cow or ox, or any heifer or calf which has been weaned with a distinctive mark, provides for the establishment of zonal branding areas for purposes of identification of cattle and prescribes offences in respect of cattle.
The President may, from time to time, by Order published in the Gazette, prescribe areas in Botswana to be a zonal branding area. The aggregate of zonal branding areas shall at all times be the whole of Botswana. Cattle in a zonal branding area shall be marked with the zonal symbol. There shall be appointed a Registrar of Brands who shall keep a register of all brands and the proprietors thereof registered under the provisions of this Act. Unauthorized branding or use of an unregistered brand shall be an offence. A brand shall constitute prima facie evidence that the cattle or hide is the property of the person in whose name the brand is registered.
