Abstract
The text of this Act consists of 52 sections, divided into 9 Parts: Preliminary (I); Registration (II); Duties and privilege of societies (III); Rights and liabilities of members (IV); Property and funds of registered societies (V); Audit, inspection and inquiry (VI); Liquidation (VII); Disputes (VIII); Miscellaneous (IX).
The President shall appoint a Registrar of Cooperative Societies (sect. 3). A society which has as object: (a) the promotion of the economic interest of its members in accordance with cooperative princples; or (b) the facilitating of the operations of such a society, may be registered in the terms of this Act with or without limited liability as the Registrar may decide, provided that the liability of a society which includes at least one Registered Society among its members shall be limited (sect. 4). Section 5 outlines conditions of registration. A Registered Society which has as one of its objects the disposal of any article produced by its members, may provide in its By-laws that every member who produces or obtains any such article shall dispose of the whole or any specified amount thereof through the society (sect. 13). Section 20 provides for the qualification for membership of a cooperative society. A person, in order to qualify for membership, must be eighteen years or older and be resident or occupier of land within the society's area of operation as described in the By-laws. Section 33 provides for the disposal of profits. Internal disputes and disputes between Registered Societies shall be referred to the Registrar. The President may make regulations as necessary for the purpose of carrying out or giving effect to the principles and provisions of this Law, including all matters listed in section 51.
