Abstract
The Veterinary Profession Act (VPA) is organised in 7 Parts and lays down the discipline for Veterinary profession in Alberta.
Part 1 identifies the scope of practice (Artt. 2-4) and states that except as otherwise provided in this Act, no person except a registered veterinarian or permit holder shall engage in the practice of veterinary medicine.
Part 2 (Artt. 5-12) establishes the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA) as the self-governing professional regulatory organization and regulates the membership application, powers, and procedures for appeal.
Under Part 3 (Artt. 13-14) the VPA authorises the Council to make regulations and bylaws; Part 4 (Artt. 15-25) concerns the registration process; Part 5 (Artt. 26-49) regulates the professional conduct laying down norms on complain and resolution process, investigation, hearing, decision and appeal.
Part 6 (Artt. 61-65) lays down general provisions, such as exemption from liability, power to require information. Part 7 (Artt. 66-68) is on penalties and offences.
